Methods of Taping or
Gluing the
Ears Up
At Home Depot, buy a roll of Insulation Tape in the plumbing department. It is called Carmacell TAP18230 AP/Armaflex insulation tape.
1/8 thick x 2" wide. cost is about $6.00.
1) Shave both side of the ear as hair has weight and pulls the ears down.
2) Wash both sides of the ear with alcohol.
3) Cut a narrow triangle of the foam tape. 2"tall by 1/2" or less wide.
4) Use cloth first aid tape about 1" wide.
5) Put sticky side of insulation tape on the inside of ear. On the side or edge of the ear toward the center of the head.
6) Fold outer half of ear towards the foam and put a piece of first aid tape around the ear to keep it folded.
7) After both ears are taped with the foam inside, use first aid tape to make a bridge across the top of the head ear to ear at the proper angle for the ears to stand. Keep bridge tape low on ears touching head.
Replace when pups pull it off or an ear comes loose and flops. Sometimes it will stay on for a week and other times they will pull it off in a day. just keep re-taping till the ears stand.
Method #2:
I start taping ears up at 6 weeks old: (1) because I want the base of
the ear to be a good solid one and, (2) because they are too young to
complain much and therefore they get used to it.
All hair needs to be shaved from both sides of the ears.
1. Buy a pool noodle at the grocery store, the one with the hole in the
middle. It is a 5' tube of flexible styrofoam. Pick a color you will
like in their ears.
2. Measure ear length.
3. With a knife, slice off a piece of the noodle 1 inch longer than ear
length.
4. Slice this piece in half lengthwise.
5. Take one half, set on table with the half-center-hole on the table.
Slicing lengthwise, decide width on the slick outer surface, appropriate
for a strip down center of ear and into ear canal (approximately half
inch - less for under 10 weeks).
6. The half inch strip is too thick to use, so slice it in half
lengthwise and throw away the center strip (it has no strength and is
useless).
7. With scissors, narrow one end slightly for sliding into the ear
canal.
8. On the slick side put a thin coating of Skin-Bond. Let dry for 1
minute.
9. Stretch ear up tight and slide foam into ear canal (not to the ear
drum). Glue the rest along center line to top of ear. Hold in place for
1 minute.
10. For 6 - 8 week old pups I sometimes have to run a tape bridge across
to keep ears as high as I would like. But by 8 weeks, if I get enough in
the ear canal the ears stand with just the foam support.
11. It will stay in anywhere from 24 hours to 10 days. The dogs do very
little complaining. There is no damage to the ears as it is flexible as
they play.
12. I pull them off and remove the glue with Uni-Solve. Sometimes the
dogs pull them off, even eat them and it comes out fine!
YOU WILL NEED: If the base of the ear is
standing, but the ear is folding over about half way up: Use 1" wide good quality masking tape. cut a piece 1 to 1 1/2" long. Shave all hair off both sides of the ear, as hair adds weight. Wash ears with alcohol. Put the tape along the edge of the ear that is towards the top of the dogs
head. Half of the tape is stuck to the inside edge of the ear and half of the
tape is stuck to the back inner edge of the ear. The stiffness of the tape should keep that slight wobble of the ear up
straight.

Method #3:
Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful..
