More Happy Pet Poems

Dog Haiku   I lie belly-up In the sunshine, happier than You will ever be. Today I sniffed Many dog behinds-I celebrate By kissing your face. I sound the alarm! Paper boy-come to kill us all Look! Look! Look! Look! Look! I sound the alarm! Garbage man-come to kill us all Look! Look! Look! Look! Look! How do I love thee? The ways are as numberless as My hairs on the rug. My human is home! I am so ecstatic I have Made a puddle. I Hate my choke chain Look, world, they strangle me! Ack! Ack! Ack! Ack! Ack! Ack! Sleeping here, my chin On your foot-no greater bliss-well, Maybe catching rats Look in my eyes and Deny it. No human could love you as much as I do. The cat is not all bad She fills the litter box with tootsie rolls. Dig under the fence-why? Because it is there. Because it's there. Because it's there. I am your best friend, Now, always, and especially When you are eating.

THOUGHTS TO THINK WHILE YOU'RE HOLDING THE CUTEST PUPPY IN THE WORLD AND
WONDERING WHETHER YOU SHOULD GET INVOLVED

How much do I love thee? Let me count the ways:
Will I love you when you puddle for nineteen continuous days
on that gorgeous Indian blanket that my friends have all admired?
Will I love you when I find you on my pillow when you're tired?
Will I love your muddy pawprints when you chase a butterfly
from the garden through the kitchen when the floor wax isn't dry?
Will I love you when you're shedding and all day I vacuum hair?
When in digging you demolish ten begonias raised with care?
Will I love you just past midnight when I let you out and then
I let you in then let you out then let you in again?
Will I love you when you're lunching on a hundred dollar shoe?
(True, you didn't touch the other, but I kinda needed two.)
The day you eat the birthday cake will I forgive? Forget?
Oh how much will I love you as I go to pay the vet
for binding up with tenderness that nasty little gash
you got while decorating the lawn with all our trash?
Will I love you when you're sandy, dripping water from the beach
as I chase you 'cross the carpet and you stay just out of reach?
At these times let me remember how cute you look today
and sigh and tell myself--I love you any way!

Dog shows....

There was a time, there really was,
When I was sweet and tender,
When SHOW DOG meant a Disney Star,
And Bitch was not a gender.

I went to bed at half past ten,
I went to church on Sunday.
On Saturday I baked the beans,
And did the wash on Monday.

But then I got a certain pup,
And an erstwhile friend said, "SHOW"
And so I did, and so I do,
OH! What I didn't know.

I used to dress with flair and style,
That was the life, don't knock it.
But now each dress from bed to ball
Must have a good bait pocket.

I used to have a certain air,
I wallowed in perfume,
I used to smell of Nuit D'Amour,
Now I smell like Mr. Groom.

My furniture was haut decor,
My pets a tank of guppies,
Now I've furniture unstuffed,
And well-adjusted puppies.

Once I spoke in pristine prose,
In dulcet tones and frail,
But now I'm using language,
That would turn a sailor pale

I was taught to be well-groomed
No matter where I went.
Now all the grooming that I do
Is in the handler's tent.

I used to long for clothes and jewels,
And a figure classed as super,
Now the thing I yearn for most
Is a nice new Pooper-Scooper.

I adored a man who murmured verse
Through intimate little dinners,
But now the words I thrill to hear
Are just three-"Best of Winners"

I rise at dawn and pack the car
The road ahead is a long one.
The one I routed on the maps
Invariably the wrong one.

I really love this doggy life
I wouldn't care to change it.
But when I get that BEST IN SHOW
I plan to rearrange it.

And when my time on earth is done,
I'll go without much nudging.
Just give me three weeks closing date,
And let me know who's judging.

Dogs Live Here

If you don't want to be greeted with paws and wiggly rears,
Don't come inside, because DOGS LIVE HERE.

If you don't like the feel of a cold nose or wet tongue,
Don't come inside, because DOGS LIVE HERE.

If you don't want to step over scattered toys,
Don't come inside, because DOGS LIVE HERE.

If you think a home ought to smell like perfume,
Don't come inside, because DOGS LIVE HERE.

But if you don't mind all this,
you'll  be instantly loved when you do come inside,
Because DOGS LIVE HERE!

Where do dogs come from?"

Adam and Eve said, "Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us
every day. Now we do not see you anymore. We are lonesome here and it is
difficult for us to remember how much you love us."
And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will
be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so
that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or
childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as
you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves."
And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve. And it
was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be
with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail.
And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the
Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal." And God said, "No
problem. Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my
love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him
  DOG."
And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved
  them.
And they were comforted.
And God was pleased.
And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

When I am Old...

I shall wear Turquoise and soft gray sweatshirts...
and a bandana over my silver hair...
and I shall spend my Social Security Checks
on Sweet Wine and My Dogs...
and sit in my house on my well-worn chair,
and listen to my dog's breathing.

I will sneak out in the middle of a warm Summer night
and take my dogs for a run, if my old bones will allow...
and when people come to call,
I will smile and nod as I show them my dogs...
and talk of them and about them...
The Ones so Beloved of the Past
and the Ones so Beloved of Today....

I still will work hard cleaning after them
and mopping and feeding them
and whispering their names in a soft, loving way.
I will wear their gleaming drool on my throat like a jewel,
and I will be an embarrassment to all, and my family...
who have not yet found the peace in being free
to have dogs as your Best Friends....

These friends who always wait,
at any hour, for your footfall...
and eagerly jump to their feet out of a sound sleep,
to greet you as if you are a God.
With warm eyes full of adoring love
and hope that you will stay and hug their big, strong necks...
and kiss their dear sweet heads...
and whisper to them of your love and the
beautiful pleasure of their very special company....

I look in the Mirror...
and see I am getting old....
this is the kind of woman I am...
and have always been.
Loving dogs is easy, they are part of me,
accept me for who I am,
My dogs appreciate my presence in their lives...
When I am old this will be important to me...
you will understand when you are old....
and if you have dogs to love too.

Grow Old With Dogs

When I am old...
I will wear soft gray sweatshirts and a bandana over my silver hair,
and I will spend my social security checks on wine and my dogs.
I will sit in my house on my well-worn chair and listen to my dogs' breathing.
I will sneak out in the middle of a warm summer night and take my dogs for a run, if my old bones  will allow.

When people come to call, I will smile and nod as I show them my dogs,
and talk of them and about them......

the ones so beloved of the past and the ones so beloved of today.

I will still work hard cleaning after them, mopping, washing, brushing, and feeding them,
and whispering their names in a soft loving way.
I will be an  embarrassment to all, especially my family,
who have not yet found the peace in being free to have dogs as your best friends.

These friends who always wait, at any hour, for your footfall,
and eagerly jump to their feet out of a sound sleep, to greet you as if you are a God.
With warm eyes full of adoring love and hope that you will always stay,

I'll hug their big strong necks.
I'll kiss their dear sweet heads,

and whisper in their very special company.
I look in the mirror
and see I am getting old.
This is the kind of person I am,

and have always been.
Loving dogs is easy,
They are part of me.
Please accept me for who I am.
My dogs appreciate my presence in their lives;
they love my presence in their  lives.
When I am old this will be important to me.
You will understand when you are old....
if you have dogs to love too.

What's Just One More Dog And One More Little Crate?

The Floor Is All Footprints, The Furniture's Dusty

The Housekeeping Suffers But What Do You Care?
Who Minds A Few Nose prints And A Little More Hair?

So Get a new Dog, You Can Always Find Room
And A Little More Time For The Dust Cloth And Broom

There's Hardly A Limit To The Dogs You Can Add
The Thought Of A Cutback Sure Makes You Feel Sad

Keep All of The Critters, In Spite Of The Bill

They Must Have Their Walks, Tho' You're Numb And You're Blue.

Late Evening Is Awful, You Scream And You Shout
At Dogs On The Sofa Who Refuse To Go Out

The Work And The Worry, The Pressure, The Bills

My Dogs Live Here

My dogs live here, they're here to stay.
You don't like pets, be on your way.
They share my home, my food, my space
This is their home, this is their place.

You will find dog hair on the floor,
They will alert you're at the door.
They may request a little pat,
A simple "no" will settle that.

It gripes me when I hear you say
"Just how is it you live this way?
They smell, they shed, they're in the way
WHO ASKED YOU? Is all I can say.

They love me more than anyone,
My voice is like the rising sun,
They merely have to hear me say
"C'mon girls, time to go and play."

Then tails wag and faces grin,
They bounce and hop and make a din.
They never say "No time for you,"
they're always there, to GO and DO.

And if I'm sad, they're by my side
And if I'm mad, they circle wide
And if I laugh, they laugh with me
They understand, they always see.

So once again, I say to you?
"Come visit me, but know this, too.
My dogs live here, they're here to stay.
You don't like pets, be on your way.
They share my home, my food, my space
This is their home, this is their place."
